The Escalon Wrestling Club (EWC) was scheduled to kick off its 2016-17 SCWAY Zone 2-3 season at a youth tournament at Tokay High this past Sunday but school administrative issues caused it to be canceled. However, several Club wrestlers traveled to Phoenix, AZ to compete at the Grand Canyon Nationals.

Over 1,000 kids from 21 states competed in the tournament. Representing the EWC were two sets of brothers, the three Gerber boys and the elder Birakos boys. All five of the grapplers impressively medaled in their respective weights and the EWC took ninth of 32 teams in points standings. Griffin Gerber took sixth in the 7-9 age group along with Garrison in the 15-Under group. Middle sibling Gideon took second in the 9-10 age group. Both Birakos brothers, Nico in the 6-Under age group and Xander in the 8-Under, took fourth. Coaching the boys were their fathers, EWC assistant and El Portal Middle School Head Coach Dimos Birakos and EWC assistant Russ Gerber.

The EWC competes at McNair High School in Stockton on Dec. 4. Look for tournament results and further information regarding the EWC in next week’s issue of The Times.
