The wrestling Gerber brothers have compiled an outstanding off season and now look to get to work with other members of the Escalon Wrestling Club, joining some 70 youngsters suiting up for the club. Photo Contributed

 

Escalon Wrestling Club action got started Tuesday, Nov. 8 and the club continues to grow every year, with almost 70 kids signed up for the 2016-17 session.

There will be split practices to accommodate the large number of wrestlers. The club continues to accept new wrestlers. The 5- to 8-year-olds meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:10 p.m. in the EHS wrestling room Wrestlers 9-years-old and up meet at 5:45 p.m. in the wrestling room and practice from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the old gym. Wednesdays will be by invite only, 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., for the more advanced wrestlers. The team is coming off its best year ever with 23 state qualifiers, 11 state placers and its first state champion Alex Gutierrez.

In other EWC news the Gerber brothers recently finished up their impressive off season. Last month the boys went to the Clovis World Challenge and had a great day with Griffith taking first, Gideon second, and Garrison third. This last weekend they went to the Gilroy World Challenge and took third. They were coached by EWC volunteer coach, their dad Russ Gerber. They have worked extremely hard this off season and the coaches are excited to see their improvement this upcoming year.

Returning as EWC president and head coach is Derek Scott. Serving as vice president once again is Tracey Miller. Returning are longtime assistant head coaches Scott Page, Nate Nash, and Eric Rowe, Larry Lawrence, Adrian Carrillo. Volunteering are Russ Gerber, the EHS wrestling staff and wrestlers.
