A pair of student-athletes at Escalon High School was recognized earlier this month in a special event hosted at the Stockton Arena.

Lucciano (Lucca) Dutra and Guillermo Alvarez both earned nominations in The Record newspaper’s all-star preps program, which saw outstanding student athletes from San Joaquin, Calaveras and Amador counties honored.

Dutra was one of 18 honorees for baseball, with Alvarez one of 15 selected in soccer.

The event was a dinner banquet with all attendees receiving gift bags filled with items from major sponsors, their dinner tickets were paid for by the sponsors and there was a “green carpet” where photographers took photos as the student-athletes entered the Stockton Arena and posed for them. Highlight of the night was the guest speaker, Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr.

Carr spoke to the student athletes and conducted a question and answer session with them.

“It was a very inspirational and motivating part of the evening,” noted mom Jill Dutra.

Alvarez and Dutra both were sophomores this past year at EHS and both played at the varsity level, contributing to their teams – with both the varsity baseball and varsity soccer squads reaching the Section final.

The recipients of the final awards and scholarships at the event were graduating seniors.

“My husband and I attended the event with both boys. As we sat there in awe of the incredible evening we realized what an honor it was that these two boys were nominated from Escalon High,” Jill added.

Both received multiple team and Trans-Valley League honors for their stellar seasons as well.

Dutra received the 2017 Varsity Trans-Valley League Baseball Most Valuable Offensive Player of the Year and First Team TVL All League honors for the varsity baseball team during an undefeated TVL season. For the soccer team, Alvarez was named the TVL’s Most Valuable Player, an honor he also received at the EHS level, and was an All-TVL selection.
