In a Monday afternoon, April 30 make-up game from a March 20 rain out against Ripon, the story of the game for the JV Lady Cougars softball squad was Kailey Costa. The freshman pitcher was sharp, pitching a no-hitter and striking out 11 Ripon hitters. The only base runner reached on an error; otherwise Costa would’ve had a perfect game.

Escalon scored 10 runs on only five hits with nine walks as well as five hit batters. The Escalon JV girls improved to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in league play with the win.

Last week, the girls took on Hughson on the road. Escalon jumped on Hughson early in this TVL game, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. They continued their torrid hitting by scoring three more in the second, two more in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth. Overall, the girls scored 15 runs on 13 hits. Top hitters were Alys Zaslove going 2-for-3 with a double, Kailey Costa going 2-for-4 with a double, and Trista Mathews going 3-for-3. Her last hit in the fifth inning was a two-run homer over the left field fence.

Costa pitched a strong game, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out seven Hughson hitters.

The JV girls were scheduled to play in their final home game against Hilmar on Tuesday, May 1 after The Times went to press and travel for their last game of the season on Thursday, May 3 at Modesto Christian.
