Tournament play in Antioch this past week saw Escalon’s varsity basketball girls win one and lose two.
The girls opened up the tournament on Thursday, Dec. 8 with a 38-21 loss to Alhambra. Jenelle Anderson was leading scorer for Escalon with 10 points, the only player in double figures as the Lady Cougars struggled to find the net.
Friday, they took a 47-35 win off the court against host Antioch, getting strong play from Shelby McCune, 20 points, and Anderson, with 10.
Facing off with Novato on Saturday, the girls took a 55-41 loss. After a competitive first half, Novato went on a 20-6 run in the third quarter, the difference in the game. McCune had 19 points in the loss.
For the JV girls, head coach Thomas O’Hare said his squad also had a tough week.
“We played in the East Union Tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We lost to East Union Thursday night 51-32.”
Alexa Gomez had 17 points and three rebounds, Hannah Boyd had eight points and two assists.
“On Friday night we played Ripon Christian and lost by six points. The final score was 29-23,” O’Hare said. “Alexa Gomez had 13 points and four rebounds. Leila Phillips had four points and six rebounds.”
Escalon then took a forfeit loss on Saturday, as they did not have enough girls to play in the fifth place game.
This week, the girls are scheduled to host Bear Creek on Thursday, Dec. 15 with the JV game at 6 p.m., varsity at 7:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Dec. 20, the girls will play host to Johansen, with the JV game at 1:30 p.m. and varsity at 3:30 p.m., getting in day games during the holiday break.
