Notching All Tournament Team honors at the recent Jackson Tournament, Escalon High junior Ashley Schuurman has shown some flashes of brilliance on the diamond already this season.

She figured heavily in to the scoring as the varsity Lady Cougars took tournament consolation honors, and also has seen a fair amount of action on the mound. She earns Athlete of the Week honors from The Times for her efforts.

She played JV softball her freshman year and made the move to varsity as a sophomore.

“I like both a lot,” she said of pitching and playing first base, the two spots where she divides her time.

She said the team should do pretty well this season, as they are coming together under new head coach Art Brooks and are working toward the same goal, getting to the playoffs
