Escalon sent seven runners to the Sac-Joaquin Section Meet in Folsom on Saturday. One of them – Flor Algandar – placed high enough to earn some hardware.

In the freshman boys race, Trenton Nascimento placed 23rd with a time of 13:40 for a 2.4 mile course.

“Trenton ran much faster than earlier in the year on this course. He was the fastest TVL person in the race,” explained Escalon head coach Rick Heflin. “Sophomore boys, Troy Bedell placed 13th in a time of 13:02. He also was the fastest TVL runner in this race. Gabby Rigg placed 39th in the frosh/soph girl race in a time of 17:39.”

For the JV girls, Flor Algandar placed 16th in a time of 25:51 and grabbed the last individual medal awarded in that division. Nora Nash placed 21st with a time of 26:17.

“Our varsity boys (Zack Gardner and Kyle Jimenez) were our only varsity athletes to make it to sections. Sometimes the conditions don’t go your way. Zack fell in the first half mile and was basically trampled. When I saw him a mile into the race he was in almost last place but he was determined to work himself back into the race,” Heflin said. “Kyle got a good start and was doing very well when he tried to go around a few runners on the outside and slipped down a hill. Luckily a tree stopped him before he rolled too far. He also got up and tried to get back into the race.”

Jimenez ended up placing 53rd in 18:47 and Gardner placed 62nd in 19:02.

“Not the times or types of races either boy wanted to end the season with but what a great work ethic and spirit to not give up and keep going even when the chips are down,” Heflin said of his varsity pair. “The Escalon High cross country team would like to thank all the community members, parent and students that helped us on our journey this year.”
