"A bump in the road," said coach Dan Thompson of the Cougar tennis team's 5-2 loss to Livingston on Friday.
It was the first Trans-Valley League defeat for the Cougars, who hosted the Wolves on April 2 and found themselves outplayed on their home court.
In boys singles, number one player Grant Tower tried to go but ended up defaulting his match in the second set.
"He had a hard played first set but then in the second, he looked over at me and just couldn't go," explained Thompson. "He was dealing with a stomach bug."
Tower lost by default, number two singles Ben Wiele found himself playing a tough opponent.
"Their number two boy is solid, Ben just got outplayed," Thompson said of the 2-6, 5-7 loss for Wiele.
The girls didn't fare any better, both number one Megan McCoid and number two Kate Thompson falling to their Livingston counterparts.
"In boys doubles, I put together John-David Brown and Brian Avila, it was the first time they were paired," said Thompson. "They took on a pair of twin brothers that are seniors, they've been playing together a long time."
The boys lost in a brief 6-1, 6-2 match.
Wins for Escalon came in the mixed doubles, Alicia Amarant improving her personal record to a perfect 6-0 and teaming with Andy Ward for a 6-1, 7-6(7-3) contest.
"They had a good match, they glided in the first but the second set was closer than it should have been," noted Thompson.
For the girls doubles, Kristin Anderson and Brittany Rigg teamed for an easy 6-1, 6-0 decision.
"A lot of our kids are having good seasons," added Thompson. "If we can get through this week with wins, I feel pretty confident we can win the TVL. A lot of teams already have two losses, we only have one."
The Cougars were slated to host Patterson on the courts Tuesday, April 6 and will play Ripon Christian on Wednesday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m., in a match rescheduled from Good Friday. On Thursday, the squad will suit up for a non-league match, hosting River City.
