Losing the preseason finale on the road, the varsity Lady Cougars came home to win their Tran-Valley League opener in convincing fashion.

They were at Calaveras for a Wednesday game, March 12, and were shut out there, 3-0.

"They scored one in the third and two in the fifth," head coach Dianne Teixeira said. "We committed four errors, they had only one earned run."

Escalon did have six hits but scattered them, not able to push any runs across the plate. Calaveras had five hits but, perhaps more importantly, no errors.

"We had two walks and left seven on base," added Teixeira.

Corrie Dollarhide had two singles, Audree Mendez had two singles, Mikala Hatfield and Casey Schmidig each added one hit. Schmidig took the loss, striking out four.

Coming home for the TVL opener on Friday, the girls hosted Ripon and went just five innings, shutting out the Indians, 10-0.

"Everyone contributed a little something," explained Teixeira.

Kattie Schmidig went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, Dollarhide was 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs and Cynthia Freitas was 2-for-3 with an RBI double.

"We showed some patience at the plate, we were not swinging at junk," Teixeira said. "Our bats are finally coming through."

In the first inning, Casey Schmidig got on with a single, Dollarhide followed with a single and after a fielder's choice by Lounette Jackson, Kattie Schmidig drilled an RBI single to put her team ahead 1-0.
