Winning on the road Tuesday, Escalon's varsity boys dropped a home game on Thursday, falling to a 1-2 mark so far to start the Trans-Valley League campaign.

They started out well for the week, upending the Riverbank Bruins 12-2 in a March 18 contest. They pieced together a few runs early, Spencer Franceschetti scoring in the second on a walk, steal, error and a sacrifice fly from Leighton Pangilinan.

Riverbank tied it in the bottom of the frame, using a walk and three consecutive singles to make it 1-1 before pitcher John Lopez struck out the side to get out of the jam.

With two outs in the third, Pangilinan drove in Nick Aprile with an RBI single, Aprile getting on with a walk, Franceschetti getting hit by a pitch and Pangilinan then knocking the single.

Three more followed in the fourth, on a three-run homer by Jacob Caton.

"That put us up 5-1 but they added their second run in the fifth," coach Greg Largent said of the Bruins. "They had a single, a walk and another single."

Escalon sealed the deal with a seven-run seventh, with big hits including Pangilinan's sacrifice fly, RBI singles from Thomas Ray and Nick Largent, a two-out bases loaded three-RBI single from Caton and an RBI single from Aprile.

"John Lopez went five innings, he gave up two runs on six hits and had 11 strikeouts," said Largent.

Pangilinan also threw one inning and notched a strikeout; Jon Whitesitt closed it out, pitching an inning.

Escalon had 12 runs on eight hits with no errors; Riverbank had two runs on six hits with three errors.
