More accolades for retired Escalon High varsity baseball coach Bob Loureiro, as he was inducted into the California Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in a ceremony at Cal State Irvine.
He was one of five new inductees into the Hall of Fame on June 26.
Loureiro retired following the 2004 season, achieving a career total of 604 wins in 40-plus seasons.
"It's an incredible feat, especially when you consider that from 1960 to about the mid-1970s, teams were only playing 12 to 15 games per year," pointed out Loureiro's son and current Escalon High athletic director Mark Loureiro. "All my life, he's been a tremendous role model, the reason I'm in coaching and have had the success I've had has come from watching him."
The induction ceremony was conducted, appropriately, on a baseball diamond.
"It was prior to the North-South High School All-Star Game," Loureiro explained. "I coached that game four years ago."
This year, however, he was not in attendance as a coach but as an honoree, inducted as the new class of five Hall of Famers.
"I received a plaque from the Rawlings Sporting Goods Company and a beautiful, beautiful watch from the Baseball Coaches Association," he noted. "They had us down on the field for the ceremony, told a little bit about us and after the game, they had a dinner for us."
The plaque honors Loureiro for his "services and success" over the years and his induction was the latest in a long list of honors and special presentations for the longtime coach since his achievement of the 600-win milestone during the 2004 campaign.
At his retirement, Loureiro's career record as a baseball coach was 604-357. The varsity Cougars made it to the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs this past season and closed out play with an outstanding 21-8 mark.
