Going 1-1 on the week, the Escalon freshman boys basketball team fell to Ripon but bounced back with a win over Orestimba.

They hosted Ripon on Tuesday, Jan. 11, losing 68-58.

"We didn't play very good defense," said coach David Anderson. "We were down 19 at the half. We played pretty good in the second half, we just didn't start (to play well) early enough."

Ben Hood had 16 points in the losing effort, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

He also was the team leader in a Thursday night home game against Orestimba, Jan. 13, the typical Friday game moved up a day because of the weekend Lloyd C. Engel wrestling tournament at the school.

With the Warriors coming in to town, Escalon had a 12-11 lead after one and the teams were knotted at the half. The young host Cougars did a little adjusting at halftime and came out with a more determined second half effort, slowly pulling way for the 66-54 final.

Hood had 19 points in the win and Anderson pointed to a "great game off the bench" from Justin Gonsalves as also contributing to the win.

Action this week for the freshmen will include starting off the Friday, Jan. 21 Homecoming slate with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Hilmar.
