The Escalon Wrestling Club hosted its annual tournament with almost 400 wrestlers on Sunday, Jan. 5. This was an extremely tough tournament with people from the North, South, Central section all attending.

“For the day we had 22 wrestlers wrestle in the event. We have a young team but the kids were working hard and the coaches were doing a great job with them,” said head coach Derek Scott. “The team had 14 wrestlers medal at the event.”

Wrestling well Sunday taking fourth were Jimmy McDowell, Houston Sizuela, and Noah Dooley. Having a good weekend earning hard fought points for State, taking third place, Milo Simoes, Freddy Velasco, Johnny VanDyk, Jacob and Matthew Lee, Dalton Shinn, Isaiah Nash, and Luca Cerasi.

Working his way to finals, falling just short of a title was Frankie Rodriguez.

Looking great bringing Gold to EWC were Ethan Butler and Trent Allgood.

“The event ran great; I want to give a personal thanks to John McDonald and all the refs from Escalon, Gregori, and Oakdale; Julia, and Brandon Abell for running the brackets, the EWC parents and all the volunteers,” noted Scott. “On behalf of myself and EWC I want to thank the Williams family for running the snack bar and Brianne and Tony Cerasi for all the helping during the event. Also Brianne for directing and running the tournament. We are extremely lucky to have Brianne serving as EWC Vice President.”

Scott also gave a final thank you to coaches Clinton Sizuela, Ben Lee, Johnny Costa, Carlos Uriate, and Mikey Simoes.

“We are real lucky to have these guys on staff; they all work hard to do whatever is best for the kids of EWC,” Scott noted.
