Traveling to Ripon for their one Trans-Valley League match of the week, Escalon tennis players easily defeated the host Indians by a 6-1 verdict.

The squad was on the courts in a Tuesday, April 27 match.

Grant Tower took a 6-0, 6-4 win in his boys number one singles match.

"In the second set, he was doing some experimenting on his serve and volley," explained coach Dan Thompson.

Ben Wiele was a winner for the Cougars in the number two boys slot, taking an easy 6-0, 6-2 win.

"He had a good match," agreed Thompson.

In the girls singles, Alicia Amarant stepped in to the number one slot and cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Kristin Anderson was a 6-3, 6-1 winner in the number two girls slot.

"In girls doubles, we had Stephanie Franklin and Breanne Cardoza, their first time teaming up, and they won 6-0, 6-1," Thompson said. "Mixed doubles was Brandon Longstreth and Coral Rocha, also playing their match together, and winning 6-2, 6-1."

The only loss of the day for Escalon came in boys doubles, a slot that has plagued them throughout the season.

"We just can't find the right combination," Thompson admitted, adding that Dallen Strong and John-David Brown did go three sets but took the loss.

"Our record is 9-2," the coach said, with the team's final TVL match at Livingston. That was scheduled for Tuesday, May 4, after The Times went to press and, depending on the outcome, Escalon could tie for the league crown with Ripon Christian.

Then it will be on to the TVL Tournament, being hosted May 7 and 8 at Merced Junior College.

"Hopefully we'll go far in the postseason," Thompson said.
