Escalon's Summer Baseball Cougars are keeping up a hectic pace, getting on the ball diamond for a number of games this summer.

"It's good for the kids, gives them something to do and we can see where the potential is for next year," said coach Greg Largent, who is working with the ballplayers this summer.

Also coaching the team are Bob Brayton, Wally Riggs, Larry August and John Largent.

"Basically it's the high school summer team," Largent explained. "We've got a lot of next year's potential varsity players and it gives them a taste of that next division, it's a big jump from JV to varsity baseball."

The team played recently in the Highway 120 Summer Baseball Classic 2004, with games staged both at Manteca and Escalon High fields.

Escalon, Hughson, Linden and Hilmar were in Bracket B, playing at Escalon while Manteca, Modesto Christian, Sierra and Central Catholic were in Bracket A playing at Manteca High.

Games kicked off on June 30, with contests also played on July 1, 2 and 3.

The Saturday, July 3 games wrapped up the tournament, pitting the same-seeded teams in each bracket against each other.

Escalon, going in as the number two seed in Bracket B, faced off against Central Catholic for the third place honors in the tournament and won the game, 6-1.

Linden, top seed in Bracket B, got past Sierra, top seed in Bracket A, by a 3-1 decision to take the Summer Classic Championship.

Modesto Christian defeated Hughson, 6-2, in the match of third seeded teams, Manteca was a 5-4 winner over Hilmar in the battle of the fourth seeded squads.

All those games were played at Escalon High.

The summer team for Escalon will close out the league with a doubleheader Wednesday, July 14 at Central Catholic.

"This week, we beat Grace Davis, 7-5, on Tuesday and then we won against an All-Star team Thursday, 4-2," added Largent.

The All-Star squad, the Cardinals, is coached by former major league player Ray Lankford.

"We're 11-5-2 right now," Largent said.

Players suiting up for the Cougars in the summer league are Grant Goedhart, Brian Beeman, Colin Riggs, Steve Gentry, Pete Krumeich, Ross Brayton, Nathan Keyser, Anthony Suniga, Jared August, Steve Largent, Eddie DeFreitas, Joey Pinasco, Jordan Ramirez, Rory Riggs, Steve Largent and Kyle Johnson.
