Cougar Runners Still Working To Hit Stride

The first Trans-Valley League cross country meet of the season at Modesto's Legion Park featured some decent times for Cougar runners, but no one ran away from the pack.

Taking second overall was the frosh-soph girls squad, 56 points, second to Riverbank. The varsity girls ended third behind Riverbank and Ripon but ahead of Orestimba. The frosh-soph boys took third out of the three competing teams at the meet and the varsity boys were fourth out of four.

For the Cougar varsity boys, top finishers were Josh Vandagriff, 15th overall in 20.27, with Alec Carpenter close behind, 16th in 20.42. A trio of Cougars came in 22nd through 24th, with Philip Beck 22nd at 22.03 followed by Nathan Conner, 22.16; Robin Gearey, 22.19. Sixth across the line for the varsity boys to round out their scoring was Joseph Fernandes, 24.22, taking 32nd overall. Hughson was the winner of the varsity boys meet, with 32 points. Ripon had 34 to take second, Riverbank in third at 62 and Escalon fourth with 94.

Leading the varsity girls were the duo of Sierra Lionudakis, ninth overall and Adriana Delucchi, 10th, both crossing the line with virtually the same time of 22.5. Riverbank was the varsity girls' winner with 23 points, Ripon second at 38, Escalon third with 65 and Orestimba a distance fourth with 120 points.

Rounding out the Lady Cougars' top six were Samantha Cuddy, 16th, 24.37; Joslin Chadwick, 17th, 24.37; Janelle Giuntoli, 19th, 25.07; Erica Victorino, 20th, 25.28.

At the JV level, top three girls for Escalon were Veronica Freeseha, 26th overall, 15.04; Leslie Garcia, 30th overall, 15.23 and Jackie Valeriano, 40th, 16.11. The Riverbank frosh soph girls took first with 33 points and Escalon second with 56.

For the boys, JV leaders were Erick Martinez, 10th overall, 13.44; Devin Carpenter, 14th, 13.56; and Marc Ney, 29th, 15.23. Ripon just missed a sweep in the category, their frosh soph boys winning with a score of 17. Hughson was second at 52 and Escalon third with 71 points.
