Cougar Golf Team Defeats Crusaders, Wolves In TVL

Escalon golfers hosted Modesto Christian at the Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Trans-Valley League action this past week.

The contest was Thursday, April 4 and the Cougars had their lowest team score of the year, a 217, taking a victory over the Crusaders, 217-318.

Leading the way were Nathan Sarkozy and Dan Bava, each carding a 42.

Matthew Spurgeon followed with a 43, Steven Gately shot a 45, as did James Wentzell. Max Mello had a 49 on the Oakdale course to round out the effort for the Cougars.

“Matthew and Max had their best rounds this season,” coach Ron Gutierrez said of Spurgeon and Mello. “We, as coaches are very happy with our progress, and we’re looking forward to the second part of our season.”

The Cougars also won on the road this past week, defeating Livingston on April 2 by a 221-269 final.

They have won every league match so far this season, currently on top of the TVL standings. The team was scheduled to play at Hughson on Tuesday, April 9 after The Times went to press and will be at Hilmar on Thursday, April 11.
