The Escalon High School Basketball Cheerleaders attended a three-day cheer camp at University of California, Santa Cruz, Aug 3 through 6. Making the trip were all members of the Junior Varsity and Varsity cheer teams. The camp was sponsored by USA (United Spirit Association) as part of a national training program across the United States, from which competitors had a chance to try out for the title of All-American Cheerleader.
The majority of time at Varsity camps is spent working with your team on stunts, cheers, dances, and sideline routines and there is also an opportunity to shine as an individual at camp by trying out for All-American. The EHS basketball cheerleaders won for 'Hardest Working Group' and several of the girls won ribbons for individual performances.
The camp provided a great atmosphere for all competitors from several schools throughout the area. Several individuals from Escalon also tried out for All-American designation with one individual, Lue Saechao, winning that distinction for Escalon High School. Only about 10 percent of all competitors across the United States receive the All-American distinction. Cheerleaders are judged by a panel selected by the USA on poise, spirit, cheer performance and overall ability. All-American designation brings with it the ability to travel and perform as a group in the London New Years Day parade with cheerleaders from all over the country.
