Give businesses a break

Dear Editor,

I think that the way they shut down Main Street in Escalon multiple days early for an event sometimes is terrible. This is bad for the businesses on Main Street because they lose customers that cannot get to their stores to shop without having to walk a long way. Aso if there is someone that is handicapped, they cannot get to the store because the handicap spots that are at the store are blocked because the road is shut down. For these reasons the store is losing revenue.

Losing this revenue for a small business can severely impact it. I know that this has been an issue for some time and been talked about at city meetings. My personal opinion and what I have heard is that when setting up for an event that they should only need a couple of hours. For these reasons this should be resolved.

Sincerely,

Cody Brown

Address field issues

Dear Editor

I believe that the soccer field here at Escalon High School needs funding towards it and even some fixing. Soccer season is during the winter which calls for lots of rain. Our soccer field is uneven and patchy and I think it needs some fixing. The rain creates holes which is worse for the soccer players being that they could possibly get hurt because of the harsh conditions of the grass. As soon as the mud wants to start and dry up, it rains again which causes it to be even worse because the field was already messed up from the previous rainfall, creating bigger holes and patches along the field.

A soccer field doesn’t stand a chance against a whole season of rainfall, but after the season ends, the soccer field is completely messed up and no one does anything about it. Soccer at our school isn’t seen as one of the important sports like Football, Basketball, or Volleyball, so I think doing something to help it would really help the school. I think our soccer field should get as much care as these other sports do. It’s as important and the damage it’s endured has been going on for years, but yet they don’t do anything about it. I believe even starting a fundraiser to raise money to fix it up is a great idea, so our soccer athletes don’t have to worry about getting hurt on the muddy grass or maybe even enjoying a good soccer season.

Sincerely,

Jasmine Casillas

Focus on health

Dear Editor,

Are we really concerned about our kids’ health? The lunch that is provided at Escalon High School seems to lack nutrition. The chicken sandwiches for example are not made with a sustainable form of chicken such as grilled chicken; they are chicken patties with mostly loose ends of chicken. The pizza is also not sustainable. For some students this can be their only meal for hours on end. I believe that there should be more nutritious and filling meals for lunch rather than the lackluster food that is served at Escalon High School.

Another problem is breakfast. One of the options is a “Breakfast Pizza” which doesn’t seem to have much substance and is flavor-less. I believe options such as oatmeal and eggs could be healthier for the students at Escalon High School. As students we deserve better because a brain that is not fueled will not perform and every meal we consume should be looked forward to and most importantly nutritious. In my humble opinion the Escalon Unified School District should reconsider the options that are available to their students to build healthy and positive habits.

Sincerely,

Nick Fernandez

Stay away from legalization

Dear Editor,

The issue, legalization of drugs, is a foolish idea that many can agree upon. By legalizing drugs it opens a bigger window for drug abuse. It emphasizes addiction, dependency, and treatment issues. Drugs impact the lives of many, whether it be an individual who deals with addiction or someone’s loved one who deals with drug abuse. Since it affects not just the addicted, but the ones who care about the addicted as well. Drugs can split up families and can cause a widespread of problems.

For example, in the OLR Research Report it lists that, “the adverse physical effects of drugs destroy families and cause drug abusers to engage in criminal activity, legalization sends the wrong message to children, and drug abuse causes increased costs to business.”

Therefore, the legalization of drugs causes worry for our future, as it can send the wrong message to adolescents and can increase crime almost everywhere. In the end, the legalization of drugs should be stopped, with the arguments from individuals worried for our future.

Sincerely,

Annalisa Sanchez
