Verner Erland 'Vern' Lundquist, 96, died at his home in Escalon on Thursday, June 10.
He was born on Jan. 5, 1914 in Oberlin, KS. His mother and father, Ruth Leila Rydquist Lundquist and John Olaf Lundquist, moved their family of three children from Oberlin, KS to Pioneer, WA in 1915. There the family grew to eight children and in 1926 they moved to Escalon. In about 1940 they moved from their original farm to a new one on Orange Avenue where they grew peaches and almonds and had a small dairy herd.
Vern served in the US Army during World War II and was stationed in India. After his return to Escalon he worked in Benders Bakery and then with Spreckels Sugar. His mother sold the family farm and he and his mother moved into a new home in Escalon where they had a few fruit trees and grape vines, a pasture and a barn.
He had many friends in the community, his neighborhood, and in the Escalon Covenant Church.
Survivors include 15 nieces and nephews and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his seven brothers and sisters.
He was a kind, gentle and God-loving man and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A brief graveside service will be held Saturday June 26 at 10 a.m. at Burwood Cemetery, 28320 East River Road in Escalon, followed by a memorial service at the Escalon Covenant Church at 11 a.m., 1155 Escalon Ave.
A light lunch will be provided afterwards. All of Vern's friends and family are invited to either or both events. Memorial gifts may be made to the Escalon Covenant Church.
