Ruth Sandall K

Ruth Evangeline Olson Sandall was born February 4, 1923 in Swedeburg, Nebraska to Fredrik and Gerda Olson. She grew up on the family farm with her brothers, Paul Richard and Robert. She graduated from Luther Academy in Wahoo, Nebraska in 1940 and then joined her mother and brothers in Escalon where they moved following the death of her father. Ruth completed nurse’s training at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon and became a registered nurse. She began her nursing career at the old hospital located in the Jones Mansion and later at Pioneer Memorial in Escalon.
Ruth married Clarence (Casey) Sandall on March 8, 1946 after he returned from WWII. Ruth continued to work part time as a nurse while helping with the farm and raising four children. Her legacy is seeing all four of her children receive their college degrees. She became the office nurse for Dr. C.J. Haskin in the 1960s and worked there until her retirement in the 1990s. She truly enjoyed taking care of the sick and injured.
Ruth was active in the Saron Lutheran Church. She was a member of the women’s groups, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and served on the church board.
Ruth is survived by her four children, Craig (Sharon) of Sonora, Jon of Escalon, Susan (Tony Williams) of Seattle, and Phil of Escalon; two grandchildren, Erik (Evilia) of Albany and Michael (Kathrin) with the USMC currently in Hawaii; three great granddaughters, Bella, Simone and Leah; sister in law Mary Ann (Paul Richard) Olson and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Casey, her parents and brothers. She was devoted to her family, church and nursing career. We are especially grateful to her friends at Saron Lutheran Church for giving her some golden years after her husband died.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Deegan Funeral Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled for Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Burwood Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Saron Lutheran Church in Escalon. Remembrances may be made to the Saron Lutheran Church, Escalon Community Ambulance, or an organization of your choice.
