Marian Katherine Johnson Manners, 97, died on Wednesday, May 4 in Springfield, Oregon.

She was born on January 30, 1941 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Swedish parents John Arvid and Emily Olson Johnson. She attended Minneapolis public schools throughout high school graduation, then went on to graduate from Miss Wood's Teachers College.

While teaching first grade in Huxley, Iowa, she met her future husband Vaughn Manners, who was also teaching there. They married November 4, 1937.

Mrs. Manners devoted her time to her family, her church and volunteer work. She was an elder and deacon in the Escalon Presbyterian Church in Escalon.

Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn Chaplin of Brentwood, Janet Ashcraft of Eugene, Oregon and Kathleen Anderson of Boise, Idaho; four grandchildren, Monica Chaplin of Florida, Jeff Chaplin of California and Sara and Arlene Ashcraft of Oregon; and two great-grandchildren, Kate and Andrew Chaplin of California.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Vaughn, in 1986, and a son, David Manners, who died in 1980.

Her body has been willed to the Oregon Health Sciences University for research. A private family service will be held.
