Joaquin D. Pereira, 89, of Escalon passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013. He was born in California on April 1, 1923 to Joaquin and Carolina Pereira.
A veteran of World War II, Navy First Class from 1943 to 1946, he was a true soldier with some dynamic stories.
Mr. Pereira had real mechanical skills. There was not an engine or motor that he could not fix. In fact, he could repair anything. He loved to pick and dry the apricots from his tree in the yard. He ate very few of them, but he loved to give them away to friends and family. He also made homemade vinegar, which he gave most of away. He was a gentle and kind soul, never saying anything bad about anyone. He loved to go out to dinner, which he did at least once a week, with his dear lady friend of 35 years, Irma Bailey of Escalon.
He is best remembered by his son, Danny, who said his dad was a selfless, loving man who gave to everyone what he had and never complained, adding that it set a great example for the family to follow.
Survivors include his son, Danny Pereira of Idaho; his three sisters, Lena Machado of Oakdale, Caroline Borba of Escalon and Alverina Cosmero of Oakdale; six grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary (Machado) Pereira; his brother Tony Pereira; and son, David Pereira.
A Mass was held on Thursday, Jan. 17 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Escalon. The graveside service was at the Merced Cemetery District/Calvary Cemetery in Merced.
