Sgt. Jeffrey Hanley, 38, originally from Oakdale, died in his sleep Monday, June 2, 2008 due to health-related issues.
He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Tom and Sherry Hanley where his dad was stationed in the Navy from 1966 to 1969. After his father was discharged, the family moved back to Oakdale where he was raised and lived for most of his life.
He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1987. During high school he played football, and was a talented baseball player, as well as a dedicated wrestler - winnings included a Tournament Championship, as well as third place in his division.
He was in the Army National Guard, Fort Chaffee, Arkansas where he was a medic for the Fort Chaffee Range Control. He joined the National Guard in 2002 after 9/11. He saw combat during two tours in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was also a firefighter and EMT in the local town where he lived near Fort Chaffee.
Mr. Hanley also served in the U.S. Navy as a medical corpsman for six years. He was stationed in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor and served on the USS Badger and USS Chosin as a corpsman during Desert Storm.
He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and loved camping in the mountains.
He was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Deanna; his adopted children, Megan, Jessica, Chris, Joshua; one grandchild, all of Arkansas; father, Tom Hanley of Fallon, NV; mother and stepfather, Sherry and Manuel Guerrero; brother, David Hanley and his children Grace and Nicholas; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Matt Williams and their children Sarah and Joshua, all of Modesto.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Theda Hanley of Oakdale.
A memorial in his honor was held June 18 at River Oak Grace Community Church, Oakdale.
