Donald Lawrence Benson, 88, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Don was born on June 22, 1933, in Fresno, California, to parents John and Gladys Benson. As a young man, he enlisted with the United States Air Force and proudly served four years defending our great country. After returning home, Don worked as a barber. He eventually joined his friend, Bob, at Third Street Barber Salon in Oakdale, and worked there for over 40 years.
Don was a man of faith and had a purpose in life to help others and to serve the Lord. He attended Escalon Trinity Church for many years and volunteered with several organizations, including Jesus Saves Ministry in Stockton. He enjoyed making his own handmade knives and spending time with his family. If you knew him, you know he loved to laugh and joke around. He was a loving husband, father, and papa to his family. He was a great friend to all.
Don is survived by his daughter, Lori (Andy) Munoz of Escalon; daughter-in-law, LaVonda Benson of Ceres; grandchildren, Angela (Rick) Guevara of Escalon, Janay Seay of Escalon, and Julien “Kyle” (Kayla) Nelson of Stockton; and great grandchildren, Alex and Emma Guevara; Braiden, Ashley, and Julien Nelson. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bonneta; his son, Scott; and his three brothers.
Deegan Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Benson family. A viewing for Don will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2022, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Deegan Funeral Chapel, 1441 San Joaquin Street, Escalon, California. A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Burwood Cemetery, 28320 East River Road, Escalon. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Trinity Church (designated for the Escalon Youth Center), Jesus Saves Ministry in Stockton (please contact Irene at 209.481.2196 for details), or National Hospice.
