Born in Bairsburg, IA. Married Seward Smith, Dec. 24, 1935. Together with her husband, baby daughter, and two younger brothers, Arlene moved to Escalon in 1938. She raised her two brothers and her own eight children on the same farm where she died at the age of 99. Arlene and her husband, Seward, were always active members of the Escalon community especially in youth activities, 4-H, youth sports, HS sports, FFA, and various events and activities. She was known by many simply as “Mama Smith.” Arlene is preceded in death by all her siblings, daughter Mary Jo, great-grandson Everett Joseph, and her beloved husband, Seward. She is survived by her children: Frances Welch, Sue Smith (Don), Dorothy Morey (Dan), Bob Smith, Peggy Zelazny (Frank), Joe Smith (Pam), John Smith (Bernadette), and sister-in-law Patricia Wood. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions in Arlene’s name may be made to the Seward and Arlene Smith Scholarship Fund, c/o Escalon High School at 1520 Yosemite, Escalon, CA 95320 or to the Escalon Presbyterian Church at 1612 First Street, Escalon, CA 95320.
Memorial service will be Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at Escalon Presbyterian Church.
