Though it was a bit chilly, there were no storm clouds in sight and not a drop of rain to be had on Saturday morning, as Opening Day for Escalon's Cal Ripken youth baseball and softball program went off like clockwork.

Escalon City Manager Greg Greeson was on hand to announce the sponsors, managers, coaches and names of each team in the various divisions, as ballplayers from the youngest T-ball division to the majors stood in uniform, holding team banners and ready to 'play ball.'

Divisions include T-ball, rookie girls, rookie boys, minor girls, minor boys, major girls and major boys.

"We have 41 teams in the Cal Ripken division," Escalon Recreation Coordinator Denean Santos said of the teams starting action on Saturday. "Our Babe Ruth program starts April 5."

In past years, names of all players were also announced but this year the ceremony was streamlined, with the team name announced to the cheers of all players on the squad.
