The 2010-2011 Homecoming King will be announced on Friday, Jan. 21 as the culmination of what promises to be a busy week for Escalon High School students, their families and the community.

Candidates for the honor are Gabriel Albor, Victor Carrillo, Jonathon Cha, Christian Franks and Brandon Shaw. The five are all involved in a variety of activities on the Escalon High campus, from clubs to sports to the Peer Interaction Team.

Gabriel Albor is the son of Gabriel and Olivia Albor, while Victor Carrillo is the son of Barnabe and Hermelinda Carrillo. Jonathon Cha's parents are Chong Cha and Mai Thao, Christian Franks is the son of Brian and Cami Franks and Brandon Shaw is the son of Dennis Shaw and Tracy Shaw.

The nominees were announced on Thursday and the King hopefuls were presented with their crowns at that time, also wearing them to school on Friday.

Special dress up days are featured this week at the school and, after having Monday off for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, students were encouraged to stay in their pajamas on Tuesday, for Pajama Day. Today, Wednesday, is being celebrated as Nerd Day, with Ugly Sweater Day set for Thursday.

Along with the Homecoming festivities this week, Thursday will also feature a special assembly and then a downtown parade to recognize the varsity football team for their state championship season.

It's back to the focus on Homecoming for Friday, when King candidates will take part in an afternoon rally, and students are asked to come dressed in the traditional Purple and Gold for spirit day.

The Friday night trio of basketball games against visiting Hilmar will start with the freshman contest at 4:30 p.m. The JV boys take the floor at 6 p.m. and the varsity plays at 7:30 p.m.

King candidates typically are escorted to the Friday night game by their parents, recognized during evening ceremonies and the new king crowned at halftime of the varsity game.
