Unusual spring weather has played havoc with many schedules so far in March and April, but officials are hoping for some sunshine this week. A couple of special events are on the radar, with the annual Escalon Sunrise Rotary Club-sponsored JV track and field meet on Thursday, and the Escalon varsity Cougars baseball team invited to a fundraising game at a minor league ballpark on Saturday.
The Thursday, April 21 Junior Varsity track and field meet will serve as the Trans-Valley League championship, said head coach Roger Beeman.
"Typically we have a number of the Escalon Sunrise Rotary Club members out there," he said, with the service club members keeping tack of events, serving as timekeepers, scorekeepers and more. JV teams from all Trans-Valley League schools are expected to attend, with hopes for little to no rain to conflict with the competition.
The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
On Saturday, April 23, the Escalon High School varsity Cougars baseball team will suit up and play ball at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, home of the minor league Stockton Ports.
"It's called 'Showcase Saturday' and it's a great treat for the kids," said Escalon varsity coach Greg Largent of getting the chance to play on a professional field. "We play Linden in the 1 p.m. game."
The chance to play at the Ports field is by invitation only, noted Largent, and the four games being played are being used as a fundraiser for Stockton Area Youth Sports.
Games begin at 10 a.m. (Tokay vs. Monte Vista), with Escalon-Linden at 1 p.m.; Lincoln vs. Elk Grove at 4 p.m. and St. Mary's vs. Arch Bishop Mitty at 7 p.m.
"It's a 100 percent fundraiser," Largent said of supporting youth sports in the region.
Admission is $9 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and children under 12. Parking at the Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton is free for the Showcase Saturday competition.
