Starting this Sunday, May 18 and being planned each Sunday from 11:11 a.m. to 12:11 p.m., residents of Escalon and all interested throughout the region are encouraged to attend a ‘sit in’ that is billed as a way to stand up for democracy and the Constitution.
Not associated with any one political affiliation, the effort is being put together by concerned citizens, with a few opening remarks planned for this week’s initial event by coordinator Amy Lewis.
She added that others can also speak if they want, with the objective to provide a forum for airing concerns, including any regarding the current administration.
“Bring a chair, and sit down with your neighbors and have open conversation,” Lewis said of the event. “I’m focusing on reaching out to our seniors and veterans. The ‘sit-in’ aspect, I hope, will be a way of making room for the needs of seniors and veterans. I’ve been thinking a lot about how many of them may be grappling with our changing country, so I just wanted to provide a space for them in our own community.”
The group will meet at the Main Street Park arch adjacent to the historic caboose downtown.
