Saturday night collision claims life of pedestrian

A pedestrian died of injuries suffered when he was struck by a vehicle along Highway 120, near Steinegul Road on Saturday evening, April 13.

According to the California Highway Patrol, which investigated the incident, the call came in about 8:39 p.m. Saturday; a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian crash.

Multiple units responded to the scene, including CHP, Escalon Fire Department and Escalon Community Ambulance.

The CHP report indicated a 2010 Subaru Forester, driven by a 42-year-old Oakdale woman, was eastbound on State Route 120 at about 50 to 55 mph. At the same time, a 20-year-old man – identified by the San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office as Anthony Ferreiro of Escalon – was standing in the eastbound lane of the highway, near Steinegul Road, directly in front of the Subaru.

“It was dark at the time of the crash and there were no streetlights in the area,” noted the CHP report.

The pedestrian was struck by the front of the Subaru and hit the windshield, then struck the pavement and came to rest on the south asphalt shoulder of Highway 120, east of Steinegul.

“CPR was performed, the report continued, but the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

Authorities said the driver of the Subaru was wearing her seatbelt and did not sustain any physical injuries. There was no determination made regarding why the man was in the roadway and it was unknown at the time of the crash if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
