Memorial Day ceremonies scheduled at three sites

Monday, May 26 is Memorial Day, a federal holiday. Schools, government offices and banks will be closed; other businesses have the option of closing.

Locally, the day will include three separate Memorial Day services, hosted by the Escalon American Legion Gustafson-Thompson Post 263.

Flags will be placed all along Main Street in Escalon by Post members at 7 a.m. Monday, in observance of the holiday. They will remain on display until 4 p.m.

The first of three services for the day is scheduled at Burwood Cemetery on River Road at 10 a.m.

That event will include a welcome, an address from guest speaker Allan Lial, a former Escalon Post 263 member, with the Honor Guard placing a memorial wreath at the flagpole, a flag ceremony, 21-gun salute and Taps.

Following the Burwood event, Post members will travel to St. John’s Cemetery, corner of Highway 120 and Carrolton Road, adjacent to St Patrick’s Catholic Church for a similar ceremony at 11 a.m., then round out the day with a noon ceremony at Farmington Memorial Park along Escalon-Bellota Road.

The U.S. federal holiday is set aside for both honoring and mourning those military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Always observed on the last Monday in May, residents are encouraged to attend any or all of the Monday, May 26 Memorial Day services around the region.
