Man Killed By Officers In Wednesday Night Shooting

The investigation continues into an officer-involved shooting in Escalon that left one man dead on Wednesday evening, June 5.

Authorities reported that the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department received a call of a man making threats in the 18000 block of Brennan; Escalon Police were requested to assist, and local units responded to the scene about 7:45 p.m.

When officers arrived, authorities said, a man identified as Matthew Freeseha, 39, got out of his vehicle, armed with a shotgun, and reportedly began firing in the officers’ direction. The responding officers – whose names were not released – returned fire and struck the man. Medical assistance was provided on scene and the man was taken to an area hospital, where he died of his injuries, according to the report.

Escalon Police Chief Mike Borges said all information about the incident is being released through the sheriff’s department. Organizations involved in the ongoing investigation include the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department, San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, Escalon Police Department and the California Department of Justice.
