Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.43/gallon, down 0.8 cents from last week’s $4.44; Oakland - $4.61, unchanged from last week; and San Jose - $4.53, down 2.8 cents from $4.56/gallon.

“While gas prices fell in more states than they rose last week, the West Coast continues to face challenges, with Oregon and Washington seeing some of the largest increases due to regional infrastructure issues,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “The good news is that the transition to cheaper winter gasoline begins this week across most of the nation, and with improvements underway in the West Coast market, I expect that average gas prices will continue to decline in the weeks ahead in most states – assuming hurricane season remains quiet.”

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the highest price in Modesto on Sept. 1 was $5.28 in 2022 and the highest U.S. average was $3.85 in 2023. Lowest price per gallon in Modesto was $2.60 on Sept. 1, 2016 and the lowest U.S. average on Sept. 1 was $2.18 per gallon in both 2016 and 2020.
