With consumer demand for gas hitting an all-time high earlier this month, prices at the pump creeping up, and people across the country preparing to drive to vacation destinations, the personal-finance website WalletHub has released three key reports to help people maximize both savings and fun: 2018’s Best and Worst States for Summer Road Trips, 2018’s Best Gas Rewards Credit Cards and the 2018 Gas and Travel Survey.

WalletHub’s road trip report found that California ranks 12th nationally for summer driving, along with some other interesting facts contained in the reports.

Here is a brief look at Road Tripping in California, and how it compared with other states, with one being the best and 25 being average.

First – Number of Attractions; sixth – Lowest Price of Three-Star Hotel Room; 12th – Nightlife Options per Capita; 12th – Vehicle Miles Traveled per Capita; fourth – Access to Scenic Byways; first – Driving Laws Rating; 18th – Fatalities per 100 Million Vehicle Miles Traveled.

The 2018 Gas and Travel Survey showed that 49 percent of drivers choose where to get gas based on price, followed by convenience (38 percent), with brand (10 percent) coming in well behind.

Also, the reports indicate that 25 percent of people have driven in at least 25 states. California (11 percent) and Texas (10 percent) are the most popular picks for best state to drive in.

Nearly one in three people think an individual should have to take a test to get a credit card, just like a driver’s license.

Sixty-two percent of people want rewards on gas more than any other type of travel purchase.

2018’s Best Credit Cards for Gas Rewards survey showed the Best Card for Cash Back at Any Station: Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express – three percent cash back on gas; up to six percent back at supermarkets; $200 initial bonus; $95 annual fee. Best Card for Points at Any Station: PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature Credit Card – five points per $1 on gas; three points per $1 at supermarkets; $100 initial bonus; no annual fee.
