award

The deadline is approaching for those wishing to nominate San Joaquin County women for the prestigious Susan B. Anthony Women of Achievement Award.

Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31. The selection committee will meet the weekend of Jan. 2 and 3.

Women who have excelled in their fields and raised the status of humankind may be nominated by an individual, organization, or business. The sponsoring organization, the San Joaquin County Commission on the Status of Women, will present no more than 10 women the coveted honor at the 41st annual banquet in February. An additional Young Feminist Award may be granted.

Electronic file packets may be obtained via email at linley17@comcast.net or by calling Beverly Fitch McCarthy at 463-6957. Printed packets are also available from McCarthy, who founded the commission in 1974, at 215 W. Stadium Drive, Stockton, CA 95204-3136.

Only those whose volunteer efforts, in addition to professional work and volunteer efforts, are judged to have raised the status of humankind in the county will be considered. Categories include business, community service, creative arts, education, government and politics, homemaking, law and legal services, labor and employment, health care, media, peace, religion, research, science, sports, women’s rights, and women’s services. Award candidates must be current county residents or employed full-time in the county.

The Young Feminist of Achievement honor was established to honor women less than 30 years of age. Only one award is given annually, if suitable candidates have been nominated.

The gala awards dinner celebrating both the honorees will be held Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Stockton Golf and Country Club. Tickets are $50 per person.
