Nature Bowl Semifinals
Fishing 1

Young outdoor enthusiasts will gather for the Nature Bowl semifinals competition on Tuesday, April 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery Visitor Center, 2001 Nimbus Road in Rancho Cordova.

The Nature Bowl is an annual competition among teams of elementary school students, focusing on ecological knowledge and conservation literacy.

Teams participate in third/fourth grade and fifth/sixth grade divisions. The teams seek answers to environmental-themed questions that are aligned with state science standards. Top-scoring teams advance to the finals, to be held May 14 at California State University, Sacramento.

The Visitor Center is on the south side of the American River just downstream (west) of the Hazel Avenue Bridge off Highway 50.

Activities include:

Bell ringers: Short-answer questions will be presented for teams to answer on a “first ring” basis.

Presentations on local issues: Students identify an environmental issue in their region and present it in one minute, including causes, effects and solutions. Their research often leads to actions in their school, neighborhood or community.

Nature investigations: Teams search for signs of wildlife, compare habitats, etc., as they answer a set of questions.

Nature relay: Students play a game in which they match natural items to environmental concepts.

Team problems: Teams construct food chains, identify adaptations and compare products of renewable and non-renewable resources.
