The Modesto Junior College Civic Engagement Project (CEP) invites the community to a screening of the documentary film ‘Resilience’ on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. in Forum 110 on East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto. The free event is part of the CEP Spring Film and Lecture Series. Campus parking is available for $2 in student parking lots.
Subtitled “The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope,” Resilience looks at studies that suggest adverse childhood experiences (such as emotional, physical and sexual abuse) may contribute to major health problems in adulthood. The film especially focuses on pioneers in pediatrics, education and social welfare that it views as inspirational models of preventative medical care.
After the film, there is a discussion with guest speakers Laurie Prusso Hatch and Nicole Neri.
Hatch is a retired MJC professor of Child Development whose work focuses on emotional and social development in young children and all human beings. She has specific expertise on working with children with challenging behaviors and the effects of trauma on children and families. Hatch has provided consulting services to Head Start and State funded programs, Local Planning Councils, First 5, CARES projects, School-Age programs and others around the state and has been a presenter at the Positive Discipline Annual Conferences, CAEYC, NAEYC, First 5 and other conferences and retreats.
Neri works for the Center for Human Services and is contracted to work with the TOPS (Turnaround Opportunity School) Program. She has worked for CHS for over 13 years and this is her fifth school year working with TOPS. Neri has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, with a concentration in Law Enforcement. She attended MJC and California State University, Stanislaus.
