Escalon Chamber of Commerce presents a pumpkin decorating and carving contest, free, at this weekend’s Sunday in the Park downtown gathering.

Offered in the city’s Main Street Park on Sunday, Oct. 13, all pumpkins must be decorated and carved at the Sunday in the Park event. The pumpkins will be provided to contestants.

The festivities start at 11 a.m. and run until 3 p.m., with the actual contest time from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Judging will begin at 2:30 p.m. and winners announced at 3 p.m.

There are three categories, with decorating only (no carving) for ages 7 and under, and carving competitions for 8- to 11-year-olds and 12-years and older. Pumpkins will be judged in the stage area at the park and participants need to bring their own carving tools and decorations to use on the pumpkins. There will be first, second and third place prizes awarded and there is no cost to enter.

Local vendors will also be on hand in the park and attendees are welcome to come dressed in old fashioned homemade costumes, with a separate competition being hosted for the ‘best dressed’ attendees.

No store bought costumes will be allowed, the contest is strictly for homemade costumes and they can be scary or funny. There will be prizes for first, second and third places as well as a Best of Show and age groups are: birth to six, 7 to 12, 13 to 18. Parent volunteers are being sought for the judging and can contact Diana White at 209-918-1842 for more information.

The Sundays in the Park are presented by the Escalon Chamber of Commerce as a way of offering some old-fashioned family fun, getting people outside to enjoy the day and giving vendors the chance to showcase their wares.
