Chosen recently as the Students of the Month at El Portal Middle School were sixth grader Mason Simas, seventh grader Drew Cunningham and eighth grade student Daniel Flores.

The recognition program at El Portal is sponsored by the Escalon Kiwanis Club.

Sixth grade student Mason Simas was nominated by teacher Kayla Jefferson for his academic growth and overall improvement.

“Mason’s academics and behavior have grown tremendously since the beginning of the year,” explained Jefferson. “He is now focused in class and always turns in his homework. He has become a very conscientious student who takes pride in his grades. I now consider him one of the leaders in our classroom and I am extremely proud of him.”

Earning a nomination from English Language Arts teacher Justin Cohea, seventh grader Drew Cunningham was recognized for academic growth and outstanding citizenship.

“Drew’s hard work and academic growth in ELA should be commended,” Cohea said. “In half of a school year, she has more than doubled the normal growth of a student in reading levels. Also, with her drive to ask questions, she has significantly improved her abilities as a writer. Drew is deserving of student of the month.”

Eighth grade student Daniel Flores was nominated for student recognition by the office staff at El Portal, cited for his positive leadership and outstanding citizenship.

“Daniel’s positive outlook and helpful nature were a true benefit to the El Portal office,” the nomination stated. “When a teacher was in need of a capable, self-starter to help her for the last trimester, Daniel was a logical choice. As much as we hated to lose him in the office, we knew he would be more beneficial in the classroom. He deserves this positive recognition and praise.”
