Trinity Church Assembly of God on California Street in Escalon will be open tonight, July 27, serving up a Wednesday evening dinner, free to the community. As part of their ongoing Love Escalon initiative, the church hosts twice a month dinners, designed to help local residents having a hard time making ends meet, open to all the last two Wednesdays of each month. Serving starts at 6 p.m. and the church opens its adjacent Clothes Closet at 6:30 p.m. the night of the dinners for those that need clothing. The church is also planning its Grand Opening celebration for the Escalon Youth Center on Saturday, Aug. 13.

Mark the calendar for Saturday, Aug. 6 and plan to attend the annual Ice Cream Social hosted at Escalon United Methodist Church at the corner of Highway 120 and Brayton in Escalon. There will be a variety of homemade ice cream and sweet treats to enjoy, with donations accepted to help offset costs. The social is set from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Coming up on Saturday Aug. 20, from 8 a.m. until noon, the Escalon Lions Club will be hosting a City Wide Shred Day, for residents to dispose of accumulated paper materials that need to be securely disposed of. This event is open to all Escalon residents residing in the Escalon School District boundaries. Those attending to utilize the shredding service are asked to bring at least one can of food per box or bag of paper materials for shredding, to be donated to a local food bank. Each residential household will be limited to three copy paper sized boxes, or five grocery bags of paper to be shred. This event will be at the Escalon Park and Ride lot, at Main and Viking streets in Escalon.

Riverbank welcomes the REO Speechtrain Toastmasters Club for regular meetings every Wednesday morning, 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., at Perko’s Cafe, Patterson and Oakdale roads, Riverbank. This is a fun way to learn the self-confidence and skills needed for public speaking. All are invited to come and check out the group. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Aug. 3. Join in the next Toddler/Preschool Storytime at the Escalon Library, offered on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Also, the next session of the Senior Gentle Exercise Class will be Thursday, July 28 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the library. Class is open to all area senior citizens. Also on Tuesdays, the drop in knitting group is open to all with an interest in the craft; bring your own materials and enjoy knitting and socialization from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Oakdale’s VFW Post is gearing up for the next of its monthly hamburger night fundraisers, with Wednesday, Aug. 3 the date for the next event. Hours are from 5:30 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m., at the Oakdale Saddle Club Rodeo Grounds clubhouse. Attendees can stay after eating to socialize. All donations at the dessert table at the monthly dinner go to purchase wreaths for Wreaths Across America. The local VFW and Auxiliary’s goal is to have a wreath on every grave at the Santa Nella Veterans cemetery.

Grab a cowboy hat and low-back lawn chair or blanket and settle under the shade of heritage oaks at the first ever Red Dirt and Gold Dust Music Fest (RDGDMF), set for Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp. Tickets are on sale now at www.reddirtandgolddust.com for $25 each, and may also be purchased at the Angels Camp Body Shop, 1270 S. Main St., Angels Camp. The all-day event will host seven of the Red Dirt industry’s popular and up-and-coming bands. Tickets will rise to $30 the day of the event so there is great value in buying early. Parking is an additional $5 charge. No outside food, beverages or coolers will be allowed on the Fairgrounds.

Mark your calendars for the ninth annual Catfish Dinner, slated for Saturday, Aug. 6 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the IOOF Hall on Main Street, sponsored by the La Grange Odd Fellows of Lafayette Historical Lodge #65. It’s a long-standing summer tradition, always the first Saturday of August. Besides deep fried catfish fillets the menu also includes cornbread, coleslaw salad, corn on the cob and coffee, iced tea or lemonade with ice cream cups for dessert, all for $12 for adults, $6 for kids age 6 to 12, with kids 5 and under admitted free. Take-out dinners are also available. You can also join the raffle drawing and win one of many prizes. Tickets are a $1 donation or 6 for $5. Micke Grove Zoological Society Zoo Zoom is a health-driven, family-friendly event that includes a children’s fun run, 5K race, games, crafts, award ceremony and a pancake breakfast.
