Library Hosts Annual Meeting For Friends

The annual meeting of the Friends of the Escalon Library is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, May 13 at 9 a.m. at the library on Second Street. Nomination of officers will be conducted as the group looks to seat a full slate of officers for the coming year.

Escalon Librarian Bill Walker said the 'Friends' are a "small, but dedicated group" of volunteers that work hard to make certain things happen for the library, such as putting on the Summer Reading Program and bringing special activities to the facility throughout the year.

Michelle McKenzie has accepted the nomination for president this year, while Lorraine Vasconcellos has accepted the nomination for treasurer. Still needed are nominations for vice president and secretary and those will be accepted from the floor at the Thursday meting.

Anyone with an interest in the library and little time to spare is asked to attend the annual meeting.

Along with election of officers, the meeting will include a second agenda item, the need for a volunteer to monitor the listing of donated books that the library will put on sale via the Internet. Walker said the person for that job must be knowledgeable about the computer and Internet and be able to commit some time to the fundraising effort.

Memberships are available in the Friends of the Escalon Library organization, with a cost of $10 for an individual, $25 for family or $30 for a business or organization. Other dollar mounts can be accepted as donations as well.

The Friends have collection jars at MarVal Main Street market and Singh Market at the Valero gas station to help raise funds for programs. There is also a collection jar at the library itself.

Plans are already in place for several performances in the upcoming Summer Reading Program, with the first appearance set for Thursday, June 10 at 3 p.m., when Python Ron's Reptile Kingdom comes to town. Other performers are slated to include: Magician Brian Scott, Thursday, June 17, 3 p.m.; Bonnie Lockhart with music and fun, Thursday, July 8, 3:30 p.m.; Jean Paul Valjean and his one-man circus, Thursday, July 15, 3:30 p.m. and Puppet Art Theater, Thursday July 29 at 3:30 p.m.
