The Escalon varsity volleyball girls took down the Lady Cougars alumni team and the junior boys came out on top of the seniors in the finale of the Buff Puff trio of games hosted recently at EHS.
“This night is one of my favorite nights,” said EHS varsity volleyball coach Teresa Williamson.
A fundraiser for the volleyball program, the evening first saw the varsity girls take on a team of alumni in a spirited competition. Alumni from 1986 to 2018 made up the team, but fell in straight sets to the varsity girls. The Lady Cougars won 25-23, 25-11.
Alumni players were Peyton Arnold, Cassidy Caton, Emily Johnson, Charlene Tobin, Adalia Cajias, Brooke Silva, Michele Barajas, Nicole Bianchi, Jenna Rodriguez, Laken Furtado, Krystal Rodriguez, Natalie Bianchi and Tiana Lopez. Williamson, a Class of ’86 alum, coached the alumni team.
First Buff Puff game pitting the boys against each other saw the seniors defeat the freshmen in a tightly contested 44-40 decision. A 30-minute running clock was featured for the first round of Buff Puff games, with the highest point total team moving on. The juniors then rolled past the sophomores in their 30-minute battle, 59-38.
In the finale, it was a one game winner-take-all, with the first team to 25 points earning the Buff Puff championship.
The juniors roared out to a big lead, only to see the seniors come back and edge out in front. Then it was a back and forth contest for the final few points, with the juniors eventually taking the win over the seniors, 25-23. Lady Cougar volleyball team members served as grade level coaches for the Buff Puff teams.
