Joining the staff at Escalon Fire Department is Katy House, taking over as the administrative assistant.

A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a Native American from Towaoc, Colorado, Katy House has landed in Escalon.

She has taken over as the administrative assistant for the Escalon Fire Department, settling in to her new job and new surroundings.

She has actually lived in the area since 2010, when she moved to Modesto, after having spent four years in the Marine Corps. She served as a mechanic and did one tour of duty in Iraq, deployed for a nine-month period between 2007 and 2008.

Finding herself in between jobs recently, she learned of the position at Escalon Fire and decided to see if it would be a good fit.

“I answer the phones, do the filing, do the organizing, handle accounts payable and receivable,” House explained.

It may be different than her work as a mechanic and it’s a long way from Camp Pendleton, but it is exactly what House is looking for right now.

After leaving the Marine Corps, she went to college and got her bachelor’s degree through the University of Phoenix in Sacramento.

She worked for Stanislaus County for a year-and-a-half before taking the position in Escalon.

“I like getting to know everyone,” House said of working with the personnel at the fire station, both employees and volunteers.

House now lives in Stockton and works Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for Escalon Fire. She has two children, a two-year-old and a six-month-old, and said she enjoys the Escalon community and being a part of it.

“I like the town, it’s small but I think it’s organized very well,” she said.
