Football Season Kicks Off

The 2009 Escalon High School football season kicks off with the first game on Friday, Sept. 11.

Hosting the non-league game, the Cougars will welcome the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack to Engel Field. Kickoff for the JV game is 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game following at about 7:30 p.m.

"They're a new high school, a second year program," said Escalon head coach Mark Loureiro. "They run a spread offense so they throw a lot, they have good speed and good athletic ability."

The Wolfpack plays in the Capital Valley Conference and is a Division III school.

Loureiro said he doesn't know much about the team, since it is relatively new. However, he will take his Cougars into the contest with the same Wing T offense they have used for years, with plenty of returners anchoring both the offense and defense.

"They use a pro style 4-3 defense," the coach added, noting that the Cougars will use the game to gauge where they are, after a couple of weeks of practice and a solid Friday night scrimmage with Calaveras. (See Sports, Page A13.)

Head coach for Cosumnes Oaks is Ryan Gomes and the Wolfpack comes in with team colors of navy, orange and white.

"It's a one year deal," Loureiro said of facing off with the school. "We had to fill a void in the schedule."

Going against the higher division squad, however, will get the Cougars set up for the next few weeks, as they travel to Patterson on Sept. 18 and host Buhach Colony on Sept. 25.
