I attended the hearing of the San Joaquin County Planning Commission on Thursday. The purpose of this hearing was for the Planning Commission to be presented with the data from workshops that had been conducted throughout San Joaquin County. The data will aid the Planning Commission in its decision-making process to develop a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors regarding their determination for a preferred alternative for growth in the San Joaquin County; which includes Farmington. A petition was presented to the Commission that had been signed by approximately 90-plus residents, that did not approve of the growth in Farmington. Several of the Farmington residents were also present; they expressed their views both pro and con on the growth for Farmington. It was a public forum, which allowed anyone present a chance to stand up and voice their opinion on what they wanted to see for the future of Farmington. Three of the biggest questions that were presented to the Commission were "where was the water going to come from?" and "where will the sewage go, in order to support this expansion?" Several farmers asked the question "how would this development affect the livelihood of the surrounding farmers and would it take water from the irrigation system?"

Excerpts are taken from a book on loan from Gail Kroon. The book is called the "The History of Old Farmington."

In 1849 William and Daniel Sanderson put up a hotel, stables, and a blacksmith shop. It was called the Central Hotel, and in 1859 it was bought by John A. Campbell. The hotel was sold and bought again. This time it was bought by Charles M. Alders in 1873, and it stayed in the Alders Family as long as it was used as a hotel, and then was used as a family home till it was torn down in 1927. The hotel had a saloon, a parlor, dining room, and 10 bedrooms. It was located on the same corner where "Doc" Alders had his station and wheel business.
