Turkeys have been purchased, pies are at the ready ... and volunteers will be coming together tonight and tomorrow to help the community celebrate Thanksgiving.

It's the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner, set for serving starting at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 25. Tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 24, volunteers are needed at the Escalon Community Center between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to help get tables set up for the feast.

"People can still call to have meals delivered," said coordinator Bev Arnold.

Meals for delivery are available to the elderly, ill, and shut-ins, along with those that don't have a way to get to the Community Center.

Contact DeeAnna Jackson at 838-6808 for delivery. On Thursday, those deciding at the last minute that they want a home-delivered meal can call Arnold at 838-3336.

The traditional turkey dinner, served up with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, salad, rolls, beverages and dessert, is offered to all in the community, free of charge. Donations are accepted, but the meal is put on for free through the Escalon Ministerial Association.

Arnold said the effort is also buoyed each year by donations from local markets and businesses and residents have enjoyed the cooking of resident Tommy Joyce for the last several years.

"I delivered 22 20-pound turkeys to Tommy and he's already cooking," Arnold said. "He said this will be his last year cooking up the dinner."

The meal will be offered from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and residents can stop by any time during that period to enjoy the sit down dinner, either with family, neighbors or friends.

Volunteers, from church groups to service clubs to families joining together to work on the holiday, are asked to arrive at the Community Center at 11 a.m. Thursday to help out.

"Tommy always does a great job," Arnold added, noting that the meal is thoroughly enjoyed by those attending.

For those wishing to help out monetarily, donations can be sent to the Escalon Ministerial Association, P.O. Box 1, Escalon, CA 95320. Mark the donation for 'Thanksgiving' on the check.
