Rain or shine, volunteer firefighters from the Farmington Fire Department are due to be out in force this weekend.

The annual Fill The Boot, with money collected donated to the Firefighters Burn Institute, is scheduled from Friday, Feb. 8 through Sunday, Feb. 10. In past years, the drive has been hosted over the four-day Presidents’ Weekend holiday but Farmington Fire Chief Conni Bailey said new regulations don’t allow for the holiday weekend collection dates.

Instead, it will be the weekend before the holiday but is set to be hosted at the usual place, the intersection of Highway 4 and Escalon-Bellota Road, just outside the Farmington firehouse. Firefighters will be stationed there with their turnout boots, collecting donations from passing motorists.

The heavily traveled route has allowed for the department to collect thousands of dollars each year to benefit the Sacramento-based Burn Institute. The institute provides information and support for burn victims and their families.

Bailey said she hopes to have about 10 firefighters working the ‘Fill The Boot’ drive, which will run for roughly six to seven hours each day of the three-day collection period.

Those driving through the intersection who donate to the cause are given a flyer to place on their windshield, indicating they have given, so they aren’t approached when they pass through the area again.
