On the road for one game this past week, it was a satisfying victory for Escalon’s varsity flag football girls.
“Tuesday at River Islands we worked our way back into the win column, coming out on top with a 12-0 win,” said head coach Steve Largent. “Sophomore Georgia Northcutt got the scoring started with a beautiful cutback on a fly sweep in the first half and then in the second half, sophomore Bretta Brooks found senior Jasmine Barron for a 20-yard touchdown strike.”
Escalon’s defense again put in a “stellar performance,” said the coach, and kept the host Riptide out of the end zone.
The varsity girls compiled a 4-7 preseason non-league record.
“We have tackled a difficult schedule and have played some very large schools with very talented athletes,” Largent said. “Our staff believes that playing stiff competition will only prepare us for the gauntlet that is the TVL. We are excited to open league play.”
JUNIOR VARSITY
The JV girls had the chance to travel to the Orestimba Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 20.
They went 1-2 during the day.
“We lost to Atwater and a good Enochs team, and beat Los Banos,” said head coach Lisa Luis. “We came out flat in the first two games and made some costly mistakes on both sides of the ball.”
She said her team still isn’t quite playing the way they are capable of, but are making strides in the right direction and they look forward to starting league play this week.
In the victory over Los Banos at the tournament, there were some players making a big impact.
“Miley Krieger had two interceptions and a 40-yard touchdown carry,” Luis said. “Tenley Adams stepped in and played well at quarterback, throwing a touchdown pass to Lauren Siegel, and Payton Sawyer played really tough on the defensive side of the ball.”
