It was not a good week for scoring goals for Escalon.

The varsity soccer girls, in fact, got shut out in a pair of Trans-Valley League contests.

“This week was very rough for us,” admitted assistant coach Jim Ball.

They lost to Sonora by a 5-0 decision on Jan. 7, then lost an 8-0 contest to Hilmar on Jan. 9.

They were at home for the Wednesday contest and trailed just 2-0 at the half.

“We got outworked,” Ball said. “The Sonora girls wanted it more than us and it showed.”

Jasmine Barron led the team with five shots, Adriana Romero had three, but the team as a whole could not find the net, taking the shutout loss.

Then it was a road game at Hilmar, ending in the 8-0 final.

“I think we played better than the score shows,” noted Ball. “Hilmar is a good team and they were able to score three goals in the first nine minutes.”

Even down early, Ball said the Lady Cougars fought back.

“Our girls put forth a good effort in this game,” he said. “It was a big step up from the performance against Sonora.”

Reagan Baker, Barron and Romero each recorded two shots on goal.

“Again, we were unable to get one in,” said Ball.

The team is scheduled for a road game Wednesday at Hughson and have their league bye on Friday.

JUNIOR VARSITY

While the varsity team took a pair of losses, it was two wins going in the books for the JV girls.

Against Sonora on the home field Wednesday, the JV squad won by a 5-1 final.

“Riley Titsworth scored four goals and Mylah Lehman had one goal,” said head coach Lindsay Plascencia.

Friday, at Hilmar, the girls fought their way to a 1-0 victory.

“It was a great game, Lola Duenas scored our one goal,” Plascencia said.

The team continues to play hard each time out on the field, the coach added.

“We are battling through some injuries this season so we are just trying to rest as needed and get practices in between games,” said Plascencia.
